He unloaded the deer, his
oars the axe and his pack then poled the raft to the rocks the rope had tangled
in the day before. He tied a new rock onto the end of his rope and lowered it
down into the small cluster of rocks. As he was a few feet off shore he had to
jump into the water and wade to the beach.
He then lifted the deer and
put it across his shoulders but immediately decided it was too heavy. He
lowered it again, cut off the head then after a moments hesitation, laid the
carcass on it’s back and using the axe cut it length wise into two pieces by
cutting the ribs along one side of the back bone. He completed the task with
the filleting knife.
Bob carried one half up onto
the trail, returned for the axe and selecting a tree, cut off a limb just over
head height, leaving a six inch stub. Next he cut along the back of the hind
leg of the deer creating a slit just above the hoof. He raised the side and
slid the slit over the branch stub. The side was now just clear of the ground.
He went back to the other
half then unslung his pack and crammed the liver and heart into it. Then
repositioned it on his back and stooping easily lifted the side and slung it up
and around his neck, the center resting on his pack and shoulders. He picked up
the bow and as he passed the hanging side stooped and picked up the axe and
carried on along the trail.
