Part sunny here in the Shuswap, I'd guess at 12 C.
Will get everything loaded and hooked up later today and head out this afternoon. M's Mom looked good yesterday.
Alicia glanced at her watch, ‘five fifteen, the day is almost over, no wonder I’m hungry’ she thought.
She poked the fire into activity, half filled a pot with water and put it on the stove then went out side. She returned in a moment with a chunk of the smoked meat and dropped it into the pot.
She turned her attention back to the jars then taking a small paring knife from the table drawer, she punctured the lid on the jar of salmon and pried it off.
Cautiously she sniffed the contents and licking her lips she said aloud, “smells damn fine.”
She sat down on the chair and drumming her fingers on the table stared at the jar of salmon. “Well I’ve got no way to test it, there’s no reason it should be bad so….”
She grabbed a fork from the drawer and picked off a finger nail sized piece of the fish and with out any more hesitation popped it in her mouth, chewed and swallowed.
Next she opened the carrots and ate a piece of one then followed suit with the last jar which actually turned out to be salal berries. She ate the several of those and drank some of the juice.
She turned her attention back to Bob, “You Mr. Trespasser will get broth until we see how my body stomachs the canning.”
Chapter 15
Still hungry, Alicia cut away a piece of the deer meat in the pot and sat down as she chewed on it.
‘I wonder if I should wake him up, he needs food as well, but sleeping is good too.’
Leaving the water in the pot to boil, she fished out the remaining chunk of meat and carrying it to the table she painstakingly cut it up in to tiny pieces then dumped it back into the now boiling water.
“I’ll give it a half hour then after it’s cool I’ll wake you up.” She said to Bob’s still form.
She watched him for a moment then went to the end of the bed and kneeling lifted the trap door again. She relit the candle and lowered herself once more into the chamber.
She picked up one of the cartons of lids, climbed the ladder and shoved the carton out onto the floor. She backed down the stairs again and walked to the shelves where the empty bottles were boxed, not trusting the cardboard box they were stored in she carried them six at a time to the ladder then after she had two dozen she moved them up and onto the floor a few at a time.
When the last two dozen were up she blew out the candle and hoisted herself out of the hole.
She reset the door then moved around the cabin looking for something, anything that she could boil a large quantity of water in.
The only thing of any size were the two pails used for carrying water.
“C’mon, there must be something, Grandma didn’t preserve all that stuff in a small pot.
