THERE WAS NO WIND

Part 2

VISIONS IN THE DAWN

Chapter 1

 T
he girl, a few days before her tenth birthday, was visiting her Grandmother.  She was just hanging out watching her grandmother pulling weeds in the flower garden.  The garden was her Grandmother’s pride and joy and Cindy didn’t know what was best, just being in Granny’s garden or lying in the hammock and visiting.  It was always fun visiting Granny she could tell her little secrets, she could be a little girl one minute or an aspiring woman the next.  She wouldn’t mind helping, but had learned that she couldn’t daydream while weeding, it could be disastrous for the flowers!
She lay on her back, her skinny little girl legs hanging over the hammock, she was watching the changing clouds, “Granny?” She said, her tone a suggested a question. Without waiting she went on, “You know Brian from up north?  I’m going to marry him when I’m older.”  She didn’t really expect a reply and was content with the soft ‘mmhm’ she heard in response.  Then, “I told Mom and she said I was too young to be talking about stuff like that, but I will you know, I know I will.”
Her Grandmother sat back from her labors then taking off her gloves she pushed up to her feet and walked over to the hammock.  She took both of Cindy’s hands in hers and said, “Moms just don’t like to see their little girls grow up too soon, if you think Brian will be the boy for you, that’s okay, but you have lots of time.  It’s okay to daydream and it’s okay to talk to me about those dreams.  They will always be our secret.”
The girl tugged on her Grandmothers hands pulling herself erect, “I am not daydreaming Granny, and I will marry him when I’m old enough!  When he comes to visit again, I will tell him.”
Meanwhile a few hundred miles away, the object of Cindy’s affection was in the middle of pleading with his father to tell him again some of the stories about his grandfather and as he was about to get his wish suddenly asked, “ Dad when are we going back to Ruby Bay, why can’t we live there?” We all like it there, why can’t we move?”
“ Well son, you know why, this is where my job is and your Mom’s. We’ll go back and visit again in a few weeks after school’s out.”
“Okay, but when I grow up that’s where I’m going to live, I’m going to be a fisherman or maybe a fishing guide and I’m going to hire Cindy to be my deckhand.”
His Dad turned to hide his smile but said, “Sure son, but maybe she’ll hire you, I wouldn’t be surprised if she knows more about boats and saltwater than you do.”
“Dad, she’s a girl and she’s younger than me.” Brian replied in a disgusted tone.
