Today is February 23 rd.Alan's birthday.
Both women were quiet for a long moment then Ann spoke once more, “I came out in the morning and he was at his desk, he was already gone. Today was the first time I could bring myself to turn his computer on, I knew he had things there that would need attention. I found a message to you that must have been the last thing he did, it was in a draft and he was telling you about dates for our visit.” The voice on the other end broke again then went on, “I know how important that visit was to him and how important you had become and then I knew I had to make this call. I am so sorry.”
At last Emma struggled out of her shock, “Oh my dear, I am so sorry. You did not have to make this call, this must be so very hard for you.”
“Dialing your number was hard and telling you, but it is what he would have wanted and I feel better already.” Was the reply.
They talked for a few moments a curious situation each consoling the other, and then finally Ann said, “I have a request, when I was going through everything I found he had recently added a note in his will that he would like a small portion of his ashes scattered on the water at Ruby Bay. When we can all make the trip would you go with us and anyone else that would want to?”
There was no hesitation, “Of course, you let me know when. I’ll be there.”
They exchanged a few more words, promised each other to stay in touch and both hung up.
Another month went by and one evening Emma’s phone rang, it was Ann. They talked for a few moments, then Ann said, “We had a family service and we decided that we would all like to be at the Bay, but Roy’s youngest son asked if we could wait until after the birth of his baby early next year. I had all the notes and papers that Roy had accumulated about Ruby Bay, you and your family, he in particular was intrigued by it all. For some reason he would like the baby to be there. Will that work for you?”
“Of course it will, even if I’m working I can have the time off. My only concern is one of my daughters is expecting as well and I hope that won’t interfere.”
“Let me see, did Roy tell me it would be June for your daughter?” Ann asked.
“Yes that’s correct, it is supposed to be about the 6th.” Was the reply.
“Let’s tentatively set it for the middle of July, we can let everyone who may be interested know so they can set a day aside.” They started to say goodbye then Ann added, “I would like to meet you, is there any way we could get together sooner?”
“I have a friend that lives just an hour from you, I am going to visit her next month, I was going to phone and ask if I could come for a visit.” Replied Emma.
“Please, please do come. I would love you to come, perhaps you could stay one night?” Was the reply.
“It’s a date, I’ll let you know when I’m coming”.
