On April 23, 2012 an explosion ripped through the Lakeland Sawmill in Prince George. Two sawmill workers were killed and a handful received serious injuries.
The Criminal Justice Branch has arrived at a decision that charges will not be assigned to the four offences under the Workers Compensation Act (“the Act”) and Occupational Health and Safety Regulation.
Under Section 196 of the Act, WorkSafeBC will consider whether an administrative penalty should be imposed.
What happened?
For a dust explosion to occur, five components are required. These are: oxygen, dust, active containment, fuel (dust), an ignition source and of course, dust dispersion.
Why did this happen?
Since all of the components of the dust explosion were in place an explosion took place.
Was it Preventable?
This explosion was absolutely preventable and some of the many factors which may have contributed to this explosion are:
