November 21

5 C, rain and strong winds.

Very strong gusts of wind during the night and early morning.
For BC major sports yesterday was a rarity with both the BC Lions (football) and Vancouver Canucks (hockey) having strong wins.

I really don't want to get into social problems but sometimes I can't help myself. A couple of years ago one of the old rundown motels in Victoria was converted over to "low cost housing". In this and other cases the term "low cost" is a misnomer as in reality these places become flop houses for a variety of people such as mentally ill (they should be in properly run institutions), homeless drug addicts, petty criminals and people who just won't work. As soon as this particular building became labled the crime rate in the area went up, the police calls to the building exceed seven per week.Rooms that are rented to and meant for 1-2 people regularly house up to three x those that are registered. There have been murders, assaults, drug dealing, prostitution.
In spite of the fact that these places foment problems we still have a segment of our society saying build more, give more. These are not fixes, they certainly aren't cheap and they expand the social ills.
We need to to return to institutions for the handicapped. We need strong laws, enforcement and a justice system that punishes criminals rather than saying naughty, naughty. We should not patronize healthy, strong individuals who are smart enough to use the laxity and attitude of the rest of society to sit on their duffs, draw welfare, panhandle and make themselves obnoxious.
A huge problem is drugs and it is ever increasing. The criminals are making so much money from marijuana, they would hate to see it legalized. Prohibition of alcohol created some of the worst criminal activities in history. Draw your own conclusions.
